Universal Credit

Universal Credit is the main working-age benefit in England. It replaces six older benefits into one monthly payment. You can claim whether you’re working or not — it’s based on your household income. Apply online at gov.uk or get help at your local Jobcentre.

Council Tax Reduction

If you’re on a low income, you may be able to get your council tax bill reduced or eliminated through Council Tax Reduction. Apply to your local council — each runs its own scheme.

Free prescriptions

You don’t have to pay for NHS prescriptions if you’re under 16, under 19 and in full-time education, over 60, or receiving certain benefits. Ask your pharmacist or check gov.uk to see if you qualify.
